Bord Gais New Year Opera Gala | |  | The magnificent Italian baritone, Paolo Gavanelli returns to the National Concert Hall, Dublin and to the City Hall, Cork after an absence of a year and a half from Ireland. Paolo has now firmly established himself as, possibly, the must sought-after Verdi baritone performing on world stages today. Following recent performances of Rigoletto in San Francisco he was described as the most lustrous Italian baritone of his generation and San Francisco has had most of the first rank Italian baritones of the past half century, Tito Gobbi, Giuseppe Taddei, Ettore Bastianini, Renato Bruson, Piero Cappuccilli and Leo Nucci and (Gavanelli) holds his own in this distinguished group. It is indeed testament to the Irish audiences that this world star is making time in his impossible schedule to come back to perform in one of his favourite countries.

Joining Paolo for these exciting and prestigious events will be one of Irelands upcoming sopranos, Mairead Buicke. Mairead was born in Limerick and studied at the Royal Irish Academy of Music with Dr. Veronica Dunne. The winner of several prizes in Ireland, Mairead was a semi finalist as well as a special prizewinner at the 2004 Belvedere International Singing Competition in Vienna. She is a recent graduate of the National Opera Studio, London and is also a Bank of Ireland Millennium Scholar and a Young Associate Artist with Opera Theatre Company, Dublin.
Recent engagements include, Beethoven Music from Egmont with RTE National Symphony Orchestra and Gerhard Markson, Ravel Sheherezade with the RTE Concert Orchestra at the National Concert Hall, Dublin, a Gala Concert with the RTE Concert Orchestra and Laurent Wagner, an operatic concert with the Ulster Chamber Orchestra conducted by Stephen Barlow and a concert performance of Mimi La Boheme with the RTE National Symphony Orchestra and Gerhard Markson.
Paolo Gavanelli and Mairead Buicke will perform with the RTE Concert Orchestra, conducted by Colman Pearce in a programme of arias, duets and orchestral pieces from the popular operas by such composers as Verdi, Puccini, Donizetti, Catalani, Rossini and many more.
