EXCITING BEGINNING TO 2006/2007 “OPERA GALA” SEASON | | |
Barra O’Tuama Promotions have just announced the details of the beginning of their 2006/2007 season and these concerts, at the National Concert Hall in Dublin on Saturday November 4th and at the City Hall in Cork on Saturday November 18th promise to be very exciting performances indeed.
Returning to Ireland, after an absence of quite a few years, will be the extremely popular Italian tenor Mario Malagnini and joining him, the equally popular Italian baritone, Marzio Giossi. On stage also will be the Pro Arte Orchestra, conducted by Colman Pearce and a newcomer to the Opera Gala series. Maltese soprano, Lydia Caruana.
Mario Malagnini appeared in the very first Opera Gala in Ireland in 1985, as a very young tenor, just setting out on what became a huge international career. He stole the hearts of audiences on that occasion and has remained very special to Irish concertgoers ever since. Mario Malagnini performs all over the world in roles such as Aida, Madame Butterfly, Tosca, La Traviata, Carmen, La Boheme, Simon Boccanegra etc and has performed and continues to perform in all the major opera houses in world e.g. Munich, Berlin, Vienna, Covent Garden Rome, La Scala Milan, Verona, Trieste, Paris and further afield in places such as Chile, China and of course north America.
Also making a very welcome return to Ireland will be the hugely talented and very popular Marzio Giossi. Marzio, as with Mario Malagnini, has not appeared in Ireland for a number of years due to his very busy schedule. He has a brilliant career in Italy and all over the world (France, Holland, USA, Belgium, Japan, Switzerland) as principal baritone in operas such as: Trovatore, Rigoletto, Elisir d'amore, Bohème, Don Pasquale, Barbiere, Pagliacci, Traviata, Cavalleria Rusticana, Fedora, Gioconda, Butterfly, Forza del Destino, Roberto Devereux, Così fan tutte, Don Carlo, Maria Stuarda, Turandot, L'amico Fritz, Falstaff, Aida, Nabucco, Ernani, Carmina Burana amongst many others. He also appeared at the Torre del Lago Festival and in Monte Carlo with the well-known tenor, Andrea Bocelli in Madame Butterfly to great critical acclaim.
The third singer in these performances will be a new addition to the Opera Gala series. Lydia Caruana is a very talented Maltese soprano who is forging a very successful career for herself all over the world. Lydia has performed in Malta, Italy, Switzerland, the U.S. Canada and in the U.K. to great critical acclaim from the public and from fellow singers such as the great tenor, Giuseppe Di Stefano, who was bowled over by one of her Italian performances. Lydia has already made her debut in Ireland last year in a song recital but, such was her popularity and, due to public demand, she will return to perform in the operatic repertoire.
The programme for these prestigious performances will be a mixture of popular and well-known arias, duets, trios and songs with individual pieces also from the Pro Arte Orchestra under the baton of their conductor, Colman Pearce. These concerts, at the NCH on Saturday 4th and at the City Hall Cork on Saturday 18th November, promise to be a great start to a new “Opera Gala”: season and will have something for everything so do not miss this unique opportunity to have a great night out.
